Route to (re)settlement

Historic Columbia invites you to the public opening of Route to (re)settlement on Sunday, May 1, 4-6 PM at the Mann-Simons Site (1403 Richland Street, Columbia, SC).

With this opening, Historic Columbia, Palmetto Curatorial Exchange, and Connelly & Light launch a four-year series examining narrative shifts of Black communities and the permutations flowing from these relocations.  Focusing on South Carolina – a state which has served as the major gateway between Africa and “African American” – the exhibition follows the multifaceted heritage of the Black diaspora throughout America and beyond. 

The inaugural installment of Route to (re)settlement will run from May 1 – August 1, 2016 at the Mann-Simons Site in Columbia, South Carolina.  Curated by Cecelia Stucker of CC: Curating & Collections and co-curated by Kimberly Light of Connelly & Light, the Mann-Simons Site will feature works by acclaimed artists Rashid Johnson and Henry Taylor, and emerging stars Michi Meko, Victorian—Idongesit Udondian, and Fletcher Williams, III. 

Visitors can view Route to (re)settlement for the duration of the exhibition at the Mann-Simons Site (1403 Richland Street, Columbia, SC) on Thursday-Saturday from 1-4PMand at other times by contacting Historic Columbia for an appointment.

Preceding the opening of Route to (re)settlement, Los Angeles-based Henry Taylor will be in residence at Melrose School of Art completing his “Palmetto Portrait Sessions;” while Nigerian artist Victoria-Idongesit Udondian and Charleston quilter Marlene O’Bryant-Seabrook will conduct a community quilting workshop with residents of Marion Street High-rise at Mann-Simons Site.
