In South Carolina's capital city, courageous student activists, attorneys, and civil rights organizations waged a tenacious campaign to transform our community. Facing stiff opposition, these freedom fighters took action and forever changed a city, state, and nation. Explore Columbia's rich Civil Rights history in this walking tour down Columbia's Main Street, the site of many sit-ins, protests and marches where African Americans fought for self-determination and equality. Allow approximately one hour for this tour.
Bring your ticket stub from an Opera-tunity event to the Historic Columbia Gift Shop (1616 Blanding Street) and receive a discounted ticket to tour the Mann-Simons Site and a 20% discount on items purchased in the shop.
About the Mann-Simons Site: Located on the northeast corner of Richland and Marion streets within the heart of downtown, this property was home, work place, spiritual center and a source of pride for members of the same African American family from 1843 through 1970.
