Native and Now: An Evening with Dark Water Rising and Lakota John & Kin

Featuring two of contemporary Native American music’s brightest stars, Native and Now: An Evening with Dark Water Rising and Lakota John & Kin will be held on Friday, April 3, 2015, at 7:30 p.m. in the Booker T. Washington auditorium.  This evening of soul-stirring  music is free and open to the public. . Dark Water Rising is one of the most vibrant bands in contemporary Native American music.  This Eastern North Carolina group is led by dynamic vocalist Charly Lowry, who has grown from being a finalist on the popular television series, American Idol, into an accomplished artist that effortlessly blends Native American traditional music, gospel, blues, and R&B.  Lakota John is an eighteen-year-old Native American blues artist, whose versatile guitar playing and gritty vocals led Living Blues Magazine to call him a “talent worth watching.”  Rooted in both the Lumbee (North Carolina) and Ogala Lakota (South Dakota) tribes, Lakota John can move from playing slide guitar to a traditional Native American tune at the drop of a hat.  For this performance, Lakota John will be joined by his family – known collectively on-stage as Lakota John and Kin.
