Liminal Spaces

Liminal spaces are transitory, transitional zones – in this context, music that straddles multiple musical styles or historical eras or creates a sense of being on the threshold of a new reality. Performed by members of the University of South Carolina bassoon studio and its director, UofSC bassoon professor Michael Harley, Liminal Spaces: Chamber Music for Multiple Bassoons explores the balance between momentary discomfort and transformation.

The program will include the world premiere of Liminal Qualities by UofSC music theory instructor Matthew Fink. Other works are by Amy Beth Kirsten, called “one of America’s most innovative and visionary composers” (BBC Music Magazine), Emily Joy Sullivan, David Charlwood, Greg Alexander, and the highly idiosyncratic Renaissance composer Carlo Gesualdo.
