What is musicality, and how do we teach it? Performers who stir emotion in the listener have the ability to interpret the printed notes into music that is more than the sum of the concrete elements in the score. For many students, learning to think beyond the concrete is a major challenge. As teachers, it is important to find ways to foster the musicality that makes every student unique. Excerpts from Dr. Seuss will be used to discuss how students can craft their own satisfying musical interpretations.
