Consequences for and experiences of South Carolina's civilians, many of whom were not the stereotypical wealthy southern slaveholders that most of Sherman's men were directing their vengeance toward. Topics related to civilian experiences/suffering, conflicted feelings of guilt/vengeance among Union soldiers in the wake of the Columbia fire will be covered in this presentation by Eric Plaag.
