Archaeological Society of South Carolina Annual Conference

Our Annual Conference covers many topics in SC archaeology, but this year we will have an afternoon session that may be of special interest to the arts community. In the 19th century potters in the Old Edgefield District decorated jugs and cups with molded human faces. These are highly valued by collectors and scholars, as African-American artisans are known to have made many of them. Ceramic scholar Phillip Wingard will give a presentation on face vessels that ties in to an exhibit at the state museum that he has curated. Anothe famous enslaved potter inscribed poetry and signed his wares with his name: Dave. Archaeologist Buddy Wingard has filmed an award winning video on the work of Dave that will be presented during the afternoon session. Carl Steen will present an overview of his current research on SC pottery, including the collection from the Landrum Stork pottery in Forest Acres.
