Lisa Puryear

Artist Types/Media

  • Visual Artist: Painting

Artist Statement

Lisa began painting and creating art at a very young age. Her parents noticed she saw things differently than they did and enrolled her in art classes. She studied painting first under Mildred White at the Sumter Gallery of Art. In High School she worked for famous SC artist Ray Davenport. She was among a select group of High School students to attend the South Carolina Governor's School for the Arts at Furman University in the Summer of 1985.

Lisa continued her studies in art at the University of South Carolina under Caro-Lin Getty, Phillip Mullen, Roy Drasites and Ann Hubbard, to name a few. Lisa is currently a member of the Trenholm Artists Guild in Columbia, SC and About Face at the Columbia Museum of Art.

Her work can currently be viewed at Colonial Life Insurance in Columbia, SC, Serenity Begins Within in Columbia, SC, AMSA Yoga in Columbia, SC and Stonefire American Grill in Columbia, SC. In 2011 she was selected to participate in the Contemporaries Artist of the Year Show, the SC Arts Commission Gala and the Art with a Heart Show benefiting the Ronald McDonald House. Her work has also shown at USC Sumter and S & S Art Supply.

With my current work I am exploring how the finished work is influenced by the "inborn" images in my mind vs. the things I've learned as an artist and the images I use from photographs for my work. It is interesting to me to see the natural progression of a painting without the use of photographs or a specific image or composition to drive it compared to how more "planned" works progress (and a combination of both!). The differences are very unique and it has become an experiment in nature vs. nurture and how that idea can apply to artistic expression. I would love to get feedback from you the viewer on your favorite images and which ones you feel are successful works of art and why you feel that way.
