Artist Statement
Art, for me, is a more socially acceptable form of screaming. Through a slew of different mediums, but primarily oil painting, drawing, and printmaking, I like to play around with composition and figures, and mostly make scenes based on very specific moments and feelings of mine. I enjoy the privacy it brings while also loudly inviting people to come look and interpret it for themselves. My process varies heavily depending on my mood, but everything mostly starts in my sketchbook. If I get stuck on something, for instance, I can’t decide on a color scheme, typically I try to dig for inspiration in other works to see how different artists have tackled a similar problem. Since college, I’ve tried to take my work less seriously. I felt an obligation to make everything solely to describe my life and personal struggles, but I’ve found that only hurts my desire to work, especially as of recent. My current focus is on going backwards, focusing on the “play” part of art again, by pondering my old sketchbooks from high school, while being careful to not insert any nostalgia, and reinvent myself. I’ve enjoyed researching and practicing witchcraft lately, as it works as a form of meditation, and a conduit to try some new forms of arts and crafts.
