Come Help Us Create an Eagle Aztec Warrior during ONE Columbia: Set Sail! @ First Thursdays on Main Street.

Palmetto Luna Arts is joining ONE Columbia, The Whig, the Columbia Museum of Art and First Thursday on Main Street to celebrate the successful first year of ONE Columbia’s Cultural Passport program. To celebrate this achievement, we are inviting members of the community to learn more about Aztec culture and to help us complete our Eagle Aztec Warrior. This activity will happen during ONE Columbia: Set Sail Celebration at First Thursdays on Main Street. Which will be held on the  1500 block of Main Street, Columbia on September 3, 2015 from 6 to 9 PM.  

“As part of their culture, the Aztecs placed a strong emphasis on strength and warfare” said Wendy Schneider, member of the Board of Directors of Palmetto Luna Arts “Therefore, the warrior class was highly valued and respected.” The Aztec empire dominated Mesoamerica from Mexico and Guatemala to the territories of Salvador and Honduras in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. At its height the Aztec civilization had about 15 million people that were in almost 500 towns and cities.  “We want to pay homage to this culture by creating a warrior and educating people about the Aztecs and its traditions” said Ms. Schneider.

During ONE Columbia: Set Sail at First Thursdays on Main Street, Palmetto Luna will be creating its very own life-size Eagle Aztec Warrior. To complete this, we will be inviting attendees to help us color the feathers of the warrior’s wings. There will be a chance for everyone to feel like warriors themselves by taking their picture in front of the wings and perhaps learning a few words in Nahualt –the native language of the Aztecs.   

Palmetto Luna Arts’ mission is to foster an understanding of the Hispanic/Latino culture by promoting artistic creation and providing opportunities for cultural expression for the community in South Carolina.
