The twelfth annual Indie Grits Festival features a juried film competition that focuses on empowering all levels of Southern filmmakers with an independent mentality and far-reaching artistic scope and will take place April 12-15, 2018 in Columbia, South Carolina. Accepted Indie Grits films must have some connection to the Southeastern United States, and this year, nearly half of our 83 films are by female filmmakers and 10 percent of our films are by Latinx filmmakers. Indie Grits films tell honest, Southern stories that are inclusive of all voices, especially those usually marginalized.

Indie Grits Festival, a program of Indie Grits Labs, also includes a full lineup of engaging cultural events unmatched in the Southeast, including Indie Bits (an indie video gaming showcase), a full lineup of performances from bands, Kindie Grits (filmmaking basics for children) and a puppet slam. Indie Grits Festival will also premier the work of the Indie Grits Labs Fellows, who have been working for nearly a year with the idea of “Two Cities,” to produce new artworks that address race, gentrification, arts funding inequities, housing displacement, and unification of the North Main corridor here in Columbia.
